Locking the cherry blossom avenue: where the Hanami 2025 still blooms!
Teltow, Deutschland - The cherry blossom weeks have been an important event in Teltow for over 20 years, where visitors celebrate the bloom of the Japanese cherry trees. But this year the traditionally popular cherry blossom avenue remains completely closed due to necessary construction work. This affects the route along the Berlin Mauerweg between Teltow and the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district, where there are around 1,100 Japanese cherry trees. The blocking applies until the end of 2025, since the city of Teltow wants to protect the trees from overload and root damage. Mayor Thomas Schmidt (SPD) emphasizes the importance of a break for nature while the construction work is carried out.
These are necessary to revitalize the existing infrastructure on the Berlin Wall path. The work carried out by Grün Berlin GmbH on behalf of the Berlin Senate begins at the end of March 2025 and are to be completed in December of the same year. The renewal of the Wallweg is used to finance 90 % of GRW federal funding and 10 % from Berlin state funds. The new path covers will be water -bound to better protect the trees.
alternatives to the cherry blossom
Although Teltows Kirschblütenallee is not accessible, there are numerous alternative places to experience the beauty of the cherry blossom. The city of Teltow, together with the Environmental Initiative Teltower Platt, organizes the Japanese cherry blossom weeks, which now also offer trade fairs outside of Teltow. In Potsdam, for example, there are several places worth seeing, such as the Japanese Zierkirschenhain in the Volkspark Wiesenpark, the Neustädter Havelbucht, as well as Schiffbauergasse and Lindenstrasse.
Another highlight takes place in Werder (Havel), where the traditional tree blossom festival is celebrated, lined with Japanese cherry trees. Despite the closures, the experiences on the way from the Plantagenplatz to Friedrichshöhe are no less impressive and attract many visitors. In Kleinmachnow there is also a beautiful ornamental cherry avenue in front of the Bosch settlement, which was luckily preserved.
Important information for visitors
Despite the blocking, the city of Teltow has not offered a cherry flower ticker to avoid false incentives for visits. Visitors are asked to respect the blocking and instead visit alternative places in Berlin and Brandenburg. It is advisable to bring picnic blossoms to experience the cherry blossom, since no food and drinks are offered on site. Grilling is forbidden and all waste must be taken back.
The S-Bahn stops of Lichterfelde Süd and Teltow as well as bus lines 184, M85 and 601 are recommended for arrival. Parking spaces are not available, which should help to regulate the flow of visitors better and not to put a strain on nature. The next way to celebrate the cherry blossom in the actual sense will exist from the beginning of April 2026, when events and actions are planned to duly appreciate the beauty of the cherry trees.
