Spectacular discoveries on the whey market: Centuries -old statuettes appeared!

in Berlin-Mitte, on the whey market, archaeologists have made remarkable finds: for centuries-old characters of saints, including an eleven centimeter high statuette of St. Catherine from the 15th century. This figure made of white tone has been recovered almost intact and illustrates the piety of the late Middle Ages. At that time, St. Katharina was considered a popular emergency helper and patron saint, as the State Monument Office explained. Another highlight is a seven centimeter high Madonna with the child of Jesus, whose head is missing. These discoveries provide fascinating insights into the religious attitude to life of the time, according to Sebastian Heber, head of department of ground monument preservation.

rare finds

In addition to these statuettes, the researchers also found parts of a total of 188 female figures that date from the Middle Ages and are about eight centimeters high. These finds are according to Tagesspiegel a rarity and offer valuable information about the social and cultural practices in Berlin in the 14th and 15th centuries. Around 600,000 finds have been recovered since the excavations started five years ago, including a Japanese short sword from the 17th century. The work on the whey market, behind the Red City Hall, is expected to continue until the end of 2025.
