Citadel Spandau: Glacis ceremoniously opened after millions of renovation!

Spandau, Deutschland - The Spandau citadel shines in new splendor after a comprehensive renovation. On March 20, 2025, the Glacis, a historical parking area, was officially reopened. This area, which is a listed building and is considered an important cultural monument, has been redesigned to increase quality of stay and to promote the connection to the old town. District Office Spandau informed about the successful measures to upgrade the historical site during the opening ceremony.

The total cost of the renovation was around 2.7 million euros. The numerous innovations include the renaturation of northern areas, the installation of barrier -low seating and the creation of ecologically valuable areas. City Councilor Thorsten Schatz (CDU) and State Secretary Stephan Machulik presented the changes and invited visitors to a tour to show the extensive redesign.

focus on nature and monument protection

The redesign of the GLACIs takes place taking into account nature and species protection. The listed terrain offers habitat for rare types such as bats, beavers and kingfishers and is also used by water sports clubs. Large parts of the glacis and the citadel ditch are under protection as a landscape protection area and are part of a freedom and development concept that is intended to ensure the preservation of the citadel environment.

Previous measures already began in 2017 with the restoration of historical visual axes and wood care. The intensive participation process, in which representatives of specialist offices, nature conservation associations and citizens' initiatives were involved, ensured broad support for the projects. The redesign mainly focused on the eastern Glacis, where new ways and areas of residence were created by 2023.

a piece of history with future

The Spandau citadel is considered one of the best preserved Renaissance festivals in Europe and is an important cultural location with museums, exhibitions and events of national importance. In order to further increase the experience value, a feasibility study for the further development of the citadel is carried out. Planned measures include the optimization of path connections and improved visual axes to preserve the historical character of the site.

In the immediate vicinity of the citadel, the innovation quarters "Havel Labs" is also being built on the site of a former powder factory. This project combines listed buildings with modern wood-hybrid buildings and is expected to start in spring 2025. With its diverse offers and the successful integration of nature and monument protection, the new citadel glacis is an important step to move both local visitors and tourists to Spandau.
