U16 election in Spandau: Children and adolescents set signs for Europe

In preparation for the European elections, almost 2,000 children and adolescents under the age of 16 took part in the symbolic U16 election. This event, organized by various actors such as the district office, schools and youth institutions, aimed to inform young people about the importance of the European Union and to introduce them to the democratic process. The district councilor for youth and health, Tanja Franzke, emphasized the importance of the EU for the coming generations and encouraged all the citizens who are entitled to vote.

In the Spandau district, over 20 players participated in the Germany-wide U16 elections for the European elections on May 31 and provided polling stations. A total of 1,893 votes were given, of which 1,794 were valid. Before the elections, numerous events took place to inform young people about Europe and democracy and prepare them for the election.

A rally on the Day of the Basic Law offered students the opportunity to give their voice for the U16 election. A U16 election party on May 31, organized by Sprühlingen e. V. and the child and youth representative, offered the participants an entertaining program with a Europa quiz, a European disco and other activities.

The committed participation of the children and adolescents in the U16 election shows that they have an interest in political issues and the future of Europe. Through such events and actions, young people can be sensitized to democratic processes at an early stage and encouraged to participate in political participation.
