Stumbling block for Jewish family Becker: Memory in Kladow

On July 12, 2024, a special event will take place in Kladow - the laying of stumbling blocks for the Jewish family Becker. This commemorative event, organized by the Spandau youth history workshop, is to commemorate the fate of Thea and Wilhelm Becker and her daughter Marian, who fled to the USA in 1937 before the National Socialist regime.
Wilhelm Becker was a respected Berlin orthopedist who led a successful practice on Monbijouplatz. In 1934, the family decided to build a house in Otto-von-Wollank-Straße 30 in Groß Glienicke, which belongs to Spandau today. A year later, in 1935, the family moved to their new home. Due to the increasing threat from anti -Semitism and discrimination against Jews in Germany, the Beckers saw themselves forced to leave the country and continue their life in exile in the USA.
The stumbling block is carried out by trainees of the OSZ Knobelsdorff, and all citizens are cordially invited to take part in this moving event. The presence of Marian Becker's daughter and granddaughter, who traveled from the USA, is particularly gratifying to take part in the ceremony.
In addition to the speeches by district mayor Franz, district councilor Tanja Franzke and Jan Schultheiss, the initiator of the Becker family, students from the Hans-Carossa-Gymnasium and the Wald-Gymnasium will present their research results on the life of the family. The musical accompaniment by Jeanne Wecker will enrich the mood of the event even further.
The solemn event is also translated into English in order to enable guests from other countries to participate. Interested parties can find more information on the subject of stumbling blocks in Spandau on the website of the youth history workshop Spandau: www.jgwspandau.de/index.php? page=41
