New park on the citadel: Spandau celebrates a natural paradise!
The new park around the citadel was recently officially opened in Berlin-Spandau. The ceremonial inauguration was characterized by a high number of visitors, which gathered on March 20, 2025 to celebrate the completion of the project. Inaugurated after a construction period of four years, the park is in a picturesque location between the citadel and the Havel and offers a new space for relaxation and leisure.
Planning for the park started ten years ago, while construction started four years ago. In total, the renovation costs amounted to 2.7 million euros, with the district available 500,000 euros and the rest was financed by funding from the state of Berlin. City Councilor Thorsten Schatz (CDU) presented the new park as part of the comprehensive redesign of the citadel glacis.
expanded quality of stay and nature conservation
The redesign of the citadel glacis is part of a larger project to upgrade the listed park landscape. The work was carried out taking into account nature and species protection and aimed at significantly improving the quality of stay. New ways and seating were installed to strengthen the connection to the nearby historic old town.
The Glacis itself not only serves as a recreation room, but is also a location for various water sports clubs. In addition, large parts of the Glacis and the citadel ditch are under protection as a landscape protection area to preserve the local animal species there. The residents of the protected natural area include bats, beavers and kingfishers.
a cultural center in Spandau
The Spandau citadel is considered one of the best preserved Renaissance festivals in Europe and is not only a historical monument, but also an important cultural location with museums, exhibitions and events of national importance. In order to further increase the experience value of the citadel, a feasibility study for further development is being worked on. This aims to create better path connections and carefully optimize the visual axes without neglecting monument protection.
In addition, you plan to develop an innovation quarters called "Havel Labs" on the site of the former powder factory. This project combines listed buildings with modern wood-hybrid buildings and is intended to act as a center for research, development and sustainable production. The construction for the innovation quarters is planned for spring 2025, but details are not yet available.
