Sustainable project: Colorful raised beds from discarded book tanks in Spandau
The district central library and the adult education center in Spandau have jointly started an innovative project to promote the community and environmental awareness in the region. Since April 18, 2024, there have been six colorful raised beds on the farm between the two facilities, which have arisen from discarded book containers. These raised beds were designed and planted by the children of local daycare centers, whereby they have the opportunity to gain practical experience in gardening.
The idea behind this project is to recycle materials that are no longer required and at the same time sensitize children to nature and sustainability. The raised beds are looked after by the daycare centers Kleiner Fratz, Karlsson from the roof and Oranienburger Tor, each of which is sponsored for two beds. The children can see how to grow from seed plants and learn to take responsibility for their care.
The opening of the raised beds was celebrated as an important step towards a sustainable and committed community in Spandau. All interested parties are invited to support the project and to visit the raised beds in the course of the summer. This project should not only promote the cooperation and creativity of the children, but also create awareness of recycling and sustainability.
It can be seen how local organizations and institutions work together to implement innovative and sensible projects for the community. The raised beds not only offer the children, but also the entire community the opportunity to actively work for environmental protection and sustainability.
