Domestic violence in Spandau: Berlin citizens call for comprehensive implementation of the Istanbul Convention
Spandau has had the highest quota of domestic violence in Berlin for years, which is 40 percent above the Berlin average. The district regions Heerstrasse and Spandau Mitte are particularly affected. A new study points out that Spandau is also the most affected district of Berlin. The precarious social situation increases the risk of financial dependence on the partner and leads to a higher need for advice and support. The overloaded Spandau women's projects can hardly offer adequate support for women in acute violent situations. Without a basic infrastructure structure and the increase in the Senate remedies for the anti-violence area, a further increase in the number of domestic violence will be feared in the coming years. The implementation of the Istanbul Convention, which Germany signed years ago, requires sufficient prevention and support offers as well as protective places that meet the needs of the district. Sufficient barrier -free and inclusive living space must also be created. The demand for a complete implementation of the Istanbul Convention applies not only to Spandau, but also to Germany and Europe.
