Memory of the wall deaths: Spandau honors the victims of the wall building
commemoration of the victims of the Berlin Wall
On August 13, 1961, the SED regime in the GDR began building the Berlin Wall, which separated East and West for 28 years and became a symbol of German division and the Cold War. Numerous people lost their lives along the wall while desperately striving for freedom and wanted to flee from a oppression regime.
The district office Spandau honors the wall deaths and all victims of the wall building every year by settling wreaths with grinding on various memorials. This is not only a gesture of respect, but also an important memory of the willingness to sacrifice and the courage of those who jeopardize everything to get their freedom.
District City Councilor Thorsten Schatz will visit various memorials in Spandau next Tuesday, August 13, 2024, to pause together with the citizens and to commemorate the wall deaths. The wreaths will take place at 3:45 p.m. at the memorial on Oberjägerweg, at 4:15 p.m. at the memorial at Finkkruger Weg and at 4:45 p.m. at the memorial in Bergstrasse.
All residents of the city are cordially invited to take part in this day of commemoration and honor the victims of the Berlin Wall. It is an opportunity to reflect together and not to forget the story to learn from it and to stand up for a better future.
