Construction work on Kladower Damm: Strong rain protection from September 10th!

On September 4, 2025, several structural measures to repair storm drains will come into force in Spandau. This includes work on three defective drains on Kladower Damm in the direction of Spandau. According to the Spandau District Office The processes are under heavy strain, which is why the roadway and the curbs have to be repaired. In order to make the rain drains more efficient, they are relocated to the curb area.

Construction work will begin on September 10, 2025 and will be carried out in two phases. From September 10th to 26th, 2025, half of Kladower Damm will be closed and traffic lights will be in place. Pedestrians will have the option to use a temporary crossing while stops will be slightly relocated. There will then be a complete closure of Kladower Damm at house numbers 44 to 86 from September 26th to October 2nd, 2025. Residents of the allotment garden colony and the education center at house number 55 must expect restrictions during this time as access will not be possible. Residents have already been informed about the upcoming work.

Stormwater management and environmental protection

In parallel to these repair measures, a controversial rainwater concept for the spa promenade and the surrounding streets is being pushed forward in Spandau. This concept, which has been heavily revised due to protests in the past, aims to address the flooding problem in the former Weekend West settlement. During heavy rain, rainwater flows uncontrollably onto private properties and into Lake Groß-Glienicker See, causing pollution. A central rainwater collection basin and rainwater canals will be completed in the connecting route to Seekorso in the first construction phase Reports from the region clarify.

Construction work to convert the spa promenade began on March 4, 2024 and covers a 700 meter long section between Ritterfelddamm and the Seekorso parking lot. This work is expected to be completed by June 2024. The planned measures include the dismantling of the old road, the testing and repair of the water company networks and the construction of new roadways with integrated rainwater canals.

A citizen dialogue between the district office, the parks department and citizens' initiatives has led to a revised concept that makes tree felling necessary, but reduces it to the essentials. Replacement plantings within the settlement are also planned. The desired street spaces should not only improve the drainage of rainwater, but also enable the passage of emergency vehicles and garbage collection.

Stormwater management measures

The challenges of stormwater management are increasingly being addressed in urban planning with a wide range of measures. In this context, decentralized management measures are becoming increasingly important. These include, among other things, the unsealing of areas, the use of green spaces and water-permeable surfaces as well as the seepage of rainwater into hollows or trenches. The aim is to reduce the runoff of rainwater and thus protect water bodies, like that Federal Environment Agency underlined.

The water cycle can be stabilized through measures to reduce surface sealing and the creation of green spaces. Particularly in residential areas, rainwater treatment can be carried out using filter systems that reduce pollutants before the water is discharged into bodies of water or seeps away. These strategies are critical to protecting the region's rivers and lakes and improving the quality of life for local residents.
