Social elections: Peter Weiß demands anchoring in the Basic Law!

Berlin (dpa) - The Federal Election Officer Peter Weiß has requested a fundamental reform in the social field, namely the anchoring of social self -government in the Basic Law. "Simply keep going as before-that is not possible," emphasized Weiß, who took over the office as a CDU member of the Bundestag after his many years of work. His goal is to give the self-administration bodies of health, unemployment, pension and accident insurance more weight and to grant the insured more say in decisions.

The last social choice has shown that only about 20 percent of the approximately 52 million eligible votes will have a decline in almost eight percentage points compared to 2017. According to the published final report on the social elections, the topic could promote interesting election campaigns, because insured persons are faced with the choice between possible performance restrictions and lower contributions. Nevertheless, the reality is often the case that the legislator has already made these decisions, which could further push voter participation.
