Scandal around Ocean Berlin: Senate ignores contract chaos and citizens' interests!

The foundation stone was laid in Berlin for the controversial “Ocean Berlin” project on Rummelsburger Bucht. The celebrations attracted numerous guests from politics and construction management, including Lichtenberg Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU). Despite prior concerns regarding the project and the unclear contracts with the construction company Conex, the celebrations took place, although no final contract had not yet been signed, as RBB24 reported. The Senate Department for Urban Development was apparently unsuspecting about this state and had rely on information from Coral World, which turned out to be hasty.

gigantic dimensions and the political confusion

With an investment volume of around 90 million euros, the huge aquarium, which is supposed to hold 10 million liters of water, is one of the largest pools in the world. Coral-World Manager Erez Ben is now planning not only a huge aquarium, but also the replica of various underwater ecosystems, including a Caribbean reef and a 3D cinema that is supposed to simulate diving with living whales, was learned from the taz. However, the temporal delays and legal ambiguities raise questions, especially with regard to a suspected secret changes in the original purchase contract by the Senate Administration.

The political machinations that were around the contract extension and the changes were viewed critically by various MPs. Julian Schwarze, a representative of the Greens, expressed his lack of understanding of the non -transparent contract management and one of the most likely consequences: the loss of trust in the institutions. The trend reversal in public opinion about the project seems to be clear, because there were numerous protests against the development before, while the laying of the foundation stone now went over the stage without any noteworthy votes. The project therefore not only has structural, but also in-depth political implications, such as the reporting of taz shows.
