Sicily’s soul: exhibition reveals human-nature connection”
The exhibition “Sicilia” is currently being presented in Germany and offers a unique look at the connection between people and nature on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. This presentation for the first time in Germany is part of a creative project that deals with the diversity of Sicilian culture and the stories of its people. The artist Loredana Nemes uses both black and white and color photography in an innovative mixed technique. As berlin.de reports, the artist talks about the islanders' favorite trees and their deep emotional connections to nature.
In her photographic work, Nemes hears stories about love, escape and the connection to Sicily. A notable series of her works is the “Evergreen” series, which deals with the decades-long love of two life partners. This is accompanied by poetic texts that tell of encounters with 14 couples. Other cycles such as “Grey Tree and Sea of Heaven” and “White” bring the beauty of the trees into focus, complemented by the personal story of the artist, who had to flee Transylvania, Romania, in 1986.
Artist and her works
Loredana Nemes, born in 1972 in Sibiu, Romania, studied German literature and mathematics at RWTH Aachen. She only turned to photography in 2001 and has since had numerous exhibitions at home and abroad. Her work is represented in important collections, such as the Folkwang Museum in Essen and the Spallart Collection in Salzburg. Her most recent publications include works such as “Graubaum und Himmelmeer” (2023) and “Immergrün” (2021) as well as some older works that have already made a name for her, such as “Gier Angst Liebe” (2018).
The “Sicilia” exhibition is not only artistic, but also shows the diversity of Sicilian culture. A variety of photo prints are offered in different formats, including the works “Pino + Domenico” and “Limone + Mirjam”, both of which are available in formats from 60 x 45 cm up to 100 x 75 cm. These photo prints use the traditional silver gelatin technique, which gives a special aesthetic value. Details can be found on the loredananemes.de website.
The connection to nature
Nemes' works not only address individual stories, but also the relationship to the trees she photographs. Her series create a dialogue between human faces and nature, which is both visually appealing and profound. These artistic approaches allow viewers to reflect on the beauty and challenges of nature. Particular attention is also paid to the photographic engagement with the Jasmund National Park on Rügen, where she received a return and further creative impulses.
In summary, the exhibition “Sicilia” is used to illuminate the heritage and stories of the Sicilian people from a unique perspective. Their connection to nature, their trees and their habitat is impressively made visible in this artistic form, as can also be found on the book market, where various literature about Sicilian art and culture is offered, as can be seen on booklooker.de.
