Security alarm in Berlin: Greens are calling for women wagons in the subway!

In Berlin, the Grünen, special women's compartments are placed in the subway to increase the safety of female passengers. This initiative was initiated after the number of sexual offenses in public transport has increased by alarming 260 percent in the past ten years. According to reports from Berlin Live , a total of 391 sexual offices were listed in 2023, with the majority of the victims being women. A particularly shocking crime occurred in spring 2024 when a 63-year-old was raped in a subway. These and similar incidents have fueled the discussion about security measures in Berlin's local transport.

Antje Kapek, the Greens' traffic expert, has proposed the Tokyo model, where there are women's compartments at certain times. These compartments should offer women a retreat in order to be able to travel without constant fear of attacks. The proposal stipulates that these wagons are either positioned directly behind the driver or at the end of the train. Additional security measures are also to be implemented at the train stations, including marked zones with emergency call columns and video surveillance, as from a message from rbb24 .

reactions and skepticism

The proposal also encountered criticism of political opponents such as the AfD and FDP, who consider it insufficient and wrong. The AfD argues that the solution cannot be in a separation of the victims, but in an increased law enforcement of the perpetrators. Constructive discussions are in full swing, but the implementation of women's compartments is still uncertain and could further heat the debate about security in local public transport in Berlin.
