Safe bike paths in Neukölln: Sonnenallee will be expanded from mid -August 2024

The southern Sonnenallee in Berlin will be converted into a safe bicycle traffic area from mid -August 2024. Cycling lanes that are separated from the street are created on a distance of 1135 meters on each side of the road. This measure closes a gap in the existing network of bike paths of the district and is intended to strengthen the connection between Neukölln and Schöneweide.

The new cycling strips are built on the current parking strips and separated from the car lane by flexible bollards. Additional measures such as "lead boys", thresholds and color markings serve to increase security and to strengthen the delimitation to the road, especially at intersections where additional protective measures are not possible.

The district councilor for urban development, environment and transport, Jochen Biedermann, emphasizes the need to combine cycle paths to create attractive alternatives to car traffic. By expanding the cycling infrastructure in Sonnenallee, the offer is expanded outside the city center and a secure connection between the districts is created.

The funding for the expansion of the wheel lanes is carried out by the special program "City and Country" of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport as well as funds from the State of Berlin. The construction work is expected to be completed in September 2024.

The expansion of the bicycle lanes on southern Sonnenallee is an important step to promote cycling in Berlin and to improve traffic safety for cyclists. By creating a continuous cycle path network, secure and attractive routes for cycling are created, which represent a sustainable alternative to car traffic.
