Senate plans container village on universe areas: dispute with FU Berlin

Free University of Berlin is confronted with protests because the Senate plans to build a container village for 260 refugees on a fallow unigain area. However, the university intends to build a building for teaching and research there, which leads to conflicts. The university chancellor Andrea Güttner pointed out that the area was not suitable for the accommodation of refugees and emphasized that the university management did not agree to this measure.

The university felt over the same and stated that there were no alternative areas due to the high need for renovation and extensive construction planning. The FU proposed to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby as an alternative. The spokesman at the university emphasized the willingness to support refugee people within the scope of their opportunities.

The Senate decided to set up 16 other container villages at the end of March, since the need for living space for refugees is still high. The new locations are mainly planned in the eastern part of the city, which leads to an imbalance in the distribution. Despite the resistance and criticism on the Internet about the FU Berlin, the use of the unigain area for the temporary accommodation of refugees will continue
