The heaviest rainfalls in Dubai for decades
In the United Arab Emirates, the heaviest rainfall has occurred in 75 years that flooded large parts of Dubai. The East was particularly affected on the border with Oman, where there were considerable rainfall. Due to the weather, schools, government institutions and companies in Abu Dhabi were asked to learn and work from home. The airport in Dubai had to be late or diverted numerous flights, which led to significant disorders.
The city of Dubai was faced with flooded streets on which dozens of cars were carried away by the water masses. The heavy rains led to the traffic on important expressways. Some people had to leave their cars in the flooded streets and continue on foot. The Center for Meteorology urgently warned against entering flooded areas to prevent accidents.
The storms also had an impact in the neighboring Oman, where at least 18 people died as a result of the severe rains. There were also tragic losses in the United Arab Emirates, including an older man, whose vehicle was restored by the floods. This natural disaster illustrates the urgent need to be prepared for extreme weather phenomena. The Emirates were hosting the World Climate Conference Cop28 in Dubai last year, which underlines the importance of climate change and its effects in the region.
