Shock for Sparkassen customers: Giropay and Kwitt are set!

The Sparkasse causes excitement among its customers at the end of the year: from December 31, 2024, the online payment service Giropay will be discontinued. This popular means of payment, which enabled quick payment and sending money in real time, is replaced by a new service. As the Sparkasse reports on its website, the mobile payment method KWITT, which is particularly popular with smartphone users, will also be abolished from January 1, 2025. However, the service provider Wero will take over the functions of Kwitt and also expand it, as Berlin Live reports.

Wero enables money to send money without IBAN, for example via a mobile phone number or email address. The speed of this new procedure is remarkable: transactions between accounts should take less than 10 seconds. Wero is currently initially offered in Germany, Belgium and France, with plans for expansion to other European countries. The new function is integrated directly into the "Sparkasse" app, so that customers do not have to open an additional account with a third party. According to More Sparkasse , payments can therefore be made safe and around the clock from the familiar environment of the Sparkasse.

From 2025, online payments with Wero are also possible, followed by the use in retail in 2026. The Geldern transfer takes place directly from bank account to bank account and is intended to lead to greater financial independence. For the activation of Wero, customers need the current version of the Sparkassen app as well as the "S-Pushtan" process or the chiptan process. This pursues a seamless and quick payment for all users who want to use the advantages of this new European payment system.
