Bad weather ensures outdoor pool crisis: only 43,541 visitors in Berlin!
The outdoor pool season in Berlin has made a very bad start. According to the Berlin bathing companies, only 43,541 guests visited the outdoor pools by May 26, 2025. In comparison, the same time in the previous year recorded 112,096 visitors. The main reason for the small number of visitors is the unfavorable weather. In May 2025 there were only two days with maximum temperatures above 25 degrees, and remained below 20 degrees for 19 days. In the previous year, the baths were able to record more than 25 degrees for ten days, which led to 65,787 visitors. Despite similar water temperatures, the weather conditions were different.
The Berlin bathing companies offer only four bathrooms this year, which are heated with fossil energy. It remains unclear whether the new admission prices have an impact on the number of visitors. Historically speaking, the outdoor pools have already recorded only six percent of their summer visits in May in recent years, which indicates the weather -dependent use.
Current openings of the baths
This year numerous outdoor pools in Berlin opened at different times. The first bathrooms opened on May 15, followed by further May 24, May 29, May 31 and on June 1st. An important note: privately operated beach baths often depend on the weather conditions and often only open up at later times. The traditional lido Wannsee only opened at the beginning of May, despite the regular opening on Good Friday in other years.
The opening times of the summer baths are daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. from May to August/September. The summer season will end on September 7th for austerity measures. Wild bathing spots in Berlin, however, remain open all year round.
closures and personnel issues
With regard to the upcoming closures that begin in the first week of September, some outdoor pools have already closed their goals. This includes the baths in Staaken-West, Wuhlheide, Kinderbad Marzahn and the Monbijou children's bath. The reason for the closures are above all the beginning of the new school year and the associated need for personnel for the indoor pools, especially for school swimming lessons, which attracts around 30,000 third graders annually.
The bathrooms have announced that smaller baths are first closed, while larger bathrooms remain open longer. A remarkable example is the prince's pool in Kreuzberg, which remains open until the end of October due to its large regular customers. The decision to close baths is not exclusively based on economic criteria; Pedagogical and social considerations also flow into the planning.
prices and number of visitors
The admission prices for the Berlin bathrooms are between 3.50 euros and 5.50 euros, with discounts for certain groups. For the operation and maintenance of the baths, the Berlin bathing companies receive over 60 million euros in public grants annually. In 2022, the bathrooms counted more than five million visitors, with a third of the guests claiming the offers free of charge.
Despite the challenges that this year's outdoor pool season brings with it, it remains to be seen whether the weather can bring a turn in the coming months. The location is recorded and the Berliners have the opportunity to find out online about current number of visitors on hot days.
