Schönhauser Allee gets protected cycling lanes: More space for the environmental association

A lot will change on Schönhauser Allee in Berlin in the near future. A section of the street is to be equipped with protected cycling lanes. This will certainly upset many drivers, as this will result in parking spaces. However, figures from the Senate show that drivers are in the minority anyway. According to Oda Hasse fun of the Greens, the majority of people are already using the so -called environmental association, i.e. environmentally friendly types of locomotion such as cycling, public transport and on foot.

Especially commuters who are regularly traveling on the Schönhauser Allee by bicycle find the current conditions annoying. You often feel slowed down on the narrow high -bortar bike paths along the main road. Occasional cyclists, on the other hand, are often afraid on the even narrower sidewalks because other cyclists get too close for them. The bike paths next to the approximately nine -meter -wide car rides are simply too narrow in view of the large rush.

Unfortunately, this also leads to dangerous situations, which is reflected in the accident statistics. Last year, 60 cyclists were injured between the Eberswalder and VinetaSt would be injured, 53 of them light and seven. In 2021 there were already 21 accidents with cyclists. So the number of injured cyclists is increasing. This also increases the accident costs in non -motorized traffic from 1.4 to 2.1 million euros. The follow -up costs and psychological effects are not even taken into account, says Oda Hasse fun.

In view of these numbers, it is clear that changes are also necessary on Schönhauser Allee. The road must be safe and efficient for all road users - on foot, by bike, tram and car. This is demanding Oda Hasse Pass, the spokeswoman for the Greens faction for cycling and foot traffic in Berlin.

The Senate also sees the need for renovation. The Senate Transport Management has given the green light to move the bicycle traffic south of the Stargarder/Gleimstraße junction onto the street. This creates wider cycling strips with a width of 2.50 meters at 720 meters. The space on the sidewalks, which is becoming cleared, is to benefit the pedestrians. There will continue to be two lanes per direction for car traffic, as well as tram tracks and delivery zones.

The construction company Matthäi received the order for the conversion on May 31 and the work is expected to begin in August 2023. The costs are estimated at 1.07 million euros.

The project will certainly lead to trouble, as there are about 150 parking spaces on this section of the Schönhauser Allee. But the importance of other means of transport should not be underestimated. The Senate data shows that the environmental association, i.e. the non -motorized traffic, is of greater importance than the car. Between 20,000 and 25,000 people with motor vehicles are on the Schönhauser Allee a day, while around 10,000 bicycles are counted per day. Pedestrians also play an important role, although the exact number was not recorded. It is clear that you too will benefit from the planned changes because the sidewalks become wider. This is also an advantage for the trade.

In conclusion, it can be said that the decision for more traffic safety for cyclists and pedestrians has been made on Schönhauser Allee. Hopefully this will be the beginning, since the remaining part of the street must also be made safer.
