Refurbishment of the Berlin State Library: 20 years in the sign of the renovation!

In a worrying state, the State Library in Berlin must be extensively renovated in Potsdamer Strasse. Despite its only 46 years of history, the building shows serious defects that require a complete closure. The Prussian Culture Foundation plans to carry out the renovation work over the next 15 to 20 years, as from the B.Z. Editor reports. In order to ensure access to the more than 32 million works during this long conversion period, a replacement building is built, the exact details of which still have to be announced.

The historical value of the State Library in Berlin, which was founded in 1661 and is one of the largest libraries in the world, makes the renovation particularly important. Their stocks not only include literature of all areas of science, but also significant cultural treasures, including original scores by Beethoven and Bach as well as other valuable manuscripts. The library is active at two central locations: in the house Unter den Linden and in the Haus Potsdamer Straße. These cultural institutions not only play a key role in German history, but also at an international level after they had to survive the traces of centuries -long political and social upheavals.

Future of the library

The detailed plans for replacement construction and the renovation are currently under development. This has already been addressed in the official newsletter "Berlin talks about this". The replacement construction is essential to maintain the library operation during the renovation phase. One of the challenges is to maintain access to this unique collection, while the necessary work is carried out. The state library, which has been a center of knowledge since its foundation in 1661, will hopefully become even more accessible and functional in the new design, while at the same time it preserves its historical character.

The renovation will not only fix the structural defects, but also improve the experience of use for future generations. Information on the registration options and the replacement building can be found on the website of the State Library, as in the reports of B.Z. and wikipedia mentioned.
