Around 100 demonstrators in Berlin: violence and arrests at the rally!
On Thursday evening, a pro-Palestinian rally took place in Berlin-Mitte, where around 100 people gathered at Hackescher Markt. The event was unannounced and started around 6 p.m. The demonstrators moved between Rosenthaler Platz and Hackesche Markt. Verbally aggressive behavior towards the police was observed and there was no apparent leadership of the meeting. The police then asked people to leave Rosenthaler Strasse and sometimes used coercion to enforce evictions. As a result of counter-protest measures, scuffles broke out between the demonstrators and the emergency services, with some people uttering criminal, banned slogans and reacting aggressively to police presence. Police operations ultimately led to 94 restrictions on freedom, which were distributed among 70 women and 24 men.
As rbb24 reports, 96 investigations were initiated in the clashes. These concerned allegations such as the suspicion of using the symbols of unconstitutional and terrorist organizations, attacks on law enforcement officers, insults and physical injuries. Some photos and videos from the rally show violent confrontations, including an incident in which a police officer punched a woman in the face. However, police did not comment on this specific incident.
Escalation at the demonstration
The violent clashes in Berlin should not be viewed in isolation. According to Spiegel, the increasing willingness to use violence during demonstrations shows a worrying development. The police often see resistance to their measures as violent, while demonstrators usually do not share this perception. Conflicts often arise here because it is difficult to distinguish between violent and peaceful demonstrators.
The majority of demonstrations in Germany are peaceful, but confrontational protest methods can quickly escalate when peaceful concerns turn violent. The Federal Agency for Civic Education emphasizes that the use of violence during protests often has a symbolic function and serves to confirm identity.
In addition, it was found that the prevention of violent protests cannot be achieved through police measures alone. Rather, comprehensive political and social conflict management is necessary to counteract the phenomenon of politically motivated violence. The social perception and media coverage of such incidents contribute significantly to tensions between different groups in the population.
