No reason for panic: wasps at the coffee table and wasp nests in the garden

The warm season not only attracts people outside, but also some types of wasps who are interested in our dishes and drinks. There are numerous types of wasps in Germany, of which only two types, the common wasp and the German wasp, want to afford us at the coffee table. But no reason to worry, because garden expert Corinna Hölzel from the Bund for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) soothes how to deal with wasps at the table and a wasp nest in the garden.

To keep annoying wasps away, you can lure them away from the table with an overripe piece of fruit. It is important to keep calm and avoid violent movements because they can irritate the animals. The blowing away or applying perfume should also be avoided, as this can make the wasps aggressive. Food and sweet drinks should be covered and cleared after eating. Special caution is advised when small children sit at the table, as these wasps often perceive as a kind of threat. If there is still a wasp sting, it is advisable to keep an onion or use a battery -operated stitch healer. With a spray bottle you can drive out individual animals.

However, there are also a variety of wasp species that are not interested in our food and therefore leave us alone. These species only become aggressive when they see their nest threatened. Some examples of this are the field wasp, the middle wasp and the Saxon wasp.

The harmless wasp types build their nests in different ways. The nests of most of the types of wasp are gray and hang free, but can reach the size of a football. The nests of the common and the German wasp, on the other hand, are usually underground in the ground and can only be recognized by the entry hole. For security reasons, these nests should not be entered or disturbed by people.

wasps are an important part of our ecosystems, since they contribute to the pollination of our plants and eliminate AAS. For this reason, wasps are protected in accordance with the Federal Nature Conservation Act. The removal of wasp nests should therefore only be carried out in exceptional cases and by experts. In such cases, the animals can be sucked into a special fishing box, cut off the nest and both are reunited in another place so that the wasps can develop undisturbed there.

However, there are also simple solutions to facilitate living together with wasps. If a wasp nest was built in the immediate vicinity of your own living area, a panel can be attached as a privacy screen. This should be attached about ten centimeters below the nest, so that the wasps do not perceive human movements. As a result, they do not feel threatened and stay calm. For example, an old bed sheet or a tablecloth that is fixed with adhesive tape can serve as a privacy screen. However, it must be ensured that the wasp trajectory is not cut off.

By the way, wasps do not colonize abandoned nests again and do not build new nests in the immediate vicinity of the old. Therefore, it makes sense to let the abandoned wasp nests hang in order to prevent another settlement in the same place.

wasps are fascinating insects and fulfill important functions in our nature. We can help to enable a harmonious living together between man and wasp.
