A decline in under three year olds in daycare centers: What does that mean for the care?

Without ifs and buts: The number of toddlers in day care has suffered a bitter setback! On March 1, 2024, shocking 8,400 children less under three years came to the daycare centers. The total number therefore drops to 848,200 - a decrease of 1 percent compared to the previous year. Especially in times when everything seems to be in the upswing, this trend shows how quickly things can change in the childcare sector!

What happens here? Only in the past two years has an incessant growth recorded: in 2023 the increase was still 2.1 percent, in 2022 even 3.6 percent! The decline is therefore not only remarkable, but also puts the entire system to the test. According to the Federal Statistical Office, this decline attributes the general population development. The figures for care also suggest that the East German federal states are clearly ahead: Here, the childcare quota with 55.2 percent is well above West Germany average of only 33.9 percent!
