Berlin. Renate Künast has announced that she will no longer run in the upcoming Bundestag election. The 68-year-old Green politician and former Minister of Agriculture announced this in a letter to her district association in Tempelhof-Schönberg. "It is now time to make room for younger people," wrote Künast. Nevertheless, she would not completely disappear from the political scene. "I will stay politician," says Künast, and will see what tasks arise in the future.

Influence on agricultural policy and nutritional issues

as a spokeswoman for her faction for nutrition and agriculture since 2021, Künast has retained her passion for these topics. In particular, the realignment of payments to agriculture as well as the use of climate protection and the protection of soil, waters and biodiversity are still important to her. Working on a law on the regulation of children's marketing for sugared food, which is supported by the current Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir, is another project that she would like to advance as a member of MPs in the remaining months. "This task is not trivial. Nutritional diseases are now among the highest causes of death," emphasizes Künast.

long-term use and political career

Renate Künast's political career began in the Berlin House of Representatives in the 1980s. From 2000 to 2001 she was the federal chairman of the Greens before it was continuously elected to the Bundestag from 2002. From 2001 to 2005 she held the Federal Minister of Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture in the red-green government under Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. Subsequently, from 2005 to 2013 she worked as the group leader of the Greens in the Bundestag.

Legal dispute over online insults

In recent years, Künast made headlines primarily due to her judicial disputes against insults on Facebook. In 2022, she managed that the social network had to issue the data from ten users that they had massively insulted. The case caused a sensation because the Berlin Regional Court initially decided that Künast had to accept all 22 insults as a politician. The court later revised this decision, so that it finally went to the Federal Constitutional Court and was partially successful.

why the withdrawal is important

Künast's retreat marks a significant change in your party. As one of the formative figures of the Greens, she has shaped politics in agriculture and nutrition for decades. Her decision not to run again for the Bundestag gives younger members of their party the opportunity to bring in and continue their ideas and visions. This could lead to a dynamic change within the party and set new impulses for future political challenges.

Finally, Künast emphasizes in her letter of withdrawal that she wants to remain politically active and is excited about the new tasks and challenges. This announcement not only ensures the Greens, but also with political observers in a tense interest in their future role.
