Tegel Harbor Festival 2025: Free beer instead of tapping after the storm drama!

On Thursday evening, September 25, 2025, the Tegel Harbor Festival was ceremoniously opened by the district mayor Emine Demirbüken-Wegner. Originally scheduled for July, the event had to be postponed until September due to significant storm damage in the district. Despite the difficult circumstances, the mood on the Greenwich promenade was optimistic, and the mayor emphasized both the joint effort of all departments involved and the importance of the festival for the community.

As berlin.de reports, there were some unexpected challenges to overcome. The traditional tapping of the wooden barrel could not take place because the barrel was defective. Instead, the guests were provided with free beer from a beer cart, which did not spoil the festive atmosphere. The district mayor on the harbor festival: “This year it stands for gratitude, new beginnings and a return to normality.”

Consequences of storm damage

The storm damage caused by a strong storm in June had a profound impact on the region. According to rbb24, numerous tree felling and traffic safety measures had to be carried out. Across the district, 318 trees were assessed, of which 135 had to be secured. This extensive testing was necessary to ensure security in sensitive locations such as schools and cemeteries.

The mayor had already advised general safety in advance and pointed out that parks, green spaces and playgrounds had to remain closed due to the dangers posed by falling trees and falling branches. These safety measures are part of a comprehensive storm cleanup effort in which the Streets and Parks Department received 1,400 reports, which included almost 1,000 incidents.

In her opening speech, Demirbüken-Wegner thanked the many helpers, including Jüttner Entertainment, the Roads and Parks Department, the Technical Relief Agency and the Berlin Fire Department, for their support. “We hope for a happy, safe and unforgettable Tegel Harbor Festival 2025,” she concluded.

The committed reorganization of the harbor festival not only strengthens the solidarity of citizens, but also sets an example for resilience and cohesion in the community.
