Ceremonial unveiling of the stumbling threshold in the Julius-Leber barracks
On Tuesday, March 5, the stumbling block was ceremoniously unveiled before the public information and memorial of the Julius-Leber barracks in Berlin. The ceremony was opened by the commander of the Berlin State Command and the elder of the site, BRIGADENERAL Jürgen Karl Uchtmann. Military rabbi Alexander Nachama contributed to the solemn atmosphere with a prayer. The district mayor of Reinickendorf, Emine Demirbüken-Wegner, emphasized the importance of the stumbling threshold as a memory of the forgotten victims of the past.
The stumbling threshold is an initiative that serves to stumble across the horrors of the past and to bring the stories of the victims to light. Gunter Demnig, a renowned artist who has been known for his stumbling blocks since 1996 and is intensively committed to memory of the victims of National Socialism, personally created the stumbling threshold on site.
The unveiling of the stumbling threshold in front of the Julius liver barracks is part of a larger commemoration project that contributes to not being forgotten the history and victims of National Socialism. The ceremony is a significant step in the process of culture of memory and sensitization for the atrocities of the past.
In the table below, some information about the Julius-Leber barracks and the number of stumbling blocks in Germany are listed:
