Reinickendorf celebrates 5 years of NochMall: A festival for fair trade!

On Saturday, August 9, 2025, NochMall, the Berliner Stadtreinigung's used goods department store, celebrated a remarkable anniversary - its 5th anniversary. Numerous guests took part in this festive event, which offered a colorful program of music, hands-on activities and information stands. The Reinickendorf district in particular was represented with its own contribution.

In this context, Jane Krüger, the district's coordinator for municipal development policy (KePol), and Kerstin Hanke from the district's economic development department provided information about the principles of fair trade at the Fairtrade stand. They explained the origins and benefits of fair production conditions and offered guests the opportunity to test their knowledge with a fair trade quiz. This format attracted great interest, while the tasting of various fair trade products thrilled many visitors.

Fairtrade Town Reinickendorf

The Reinickendorf district has proudly borne the title “Fairtrade Town” since 2024. This award recognizes the commitment of administration, civil society, schools, churches and companies to fair trade and global justice, and the NochMall anniversary became an ideal platform to celebrate and promote this commitment.

The successful presentation of the Fairtrade Pavilion not only raises awareness of the importance of justice in trade, but also shows the active participation of the community. The connection between information about fair products and interactive elements such as the quiz ensures a lively exchange and promotes interest in sustainable trading practices.

Context and cultural perception

In a broader context, the term “fair sex” is often associated with social and cultural norms. The idea of the “fair maid” points to historical aspects that describe the lack of a tan in certain contexts. Originally, pale skin was a sign of wealth, due to the social class that did not work outdoors. These cultural perceptions have changed. Today, tanned skin enjoys a reverence that may be linked to globalization and the spread of air travel.

This evolutionary history of perception is also reflected in Reinickendorf's commitment to fair trade, a further step towards social justice. The title of Fairtrade Town shows that the community is ready to question old ways of thinking and actively work towards a fairer world.
