Interview with forensic medicine pioneer: of the secrets of death and the end of his career

Michael Tsokos is a prominent person in Germany in the field of forensic medicine. His diverse activities and experiences shaped his career, including the management of forensic medicine at the Berlin Charité. The end of 2023 ended his work on the Charité for various reasons. Tsokos emphasized that medicine should never be political for him, and he increasingly felt the Charité, which did not correspond to his view of independent university medicine. The quality of the lecturer relationship also suffered from changes that were particularly noticeable during the Corona period. Tsokos made it clear that the Charité had become increasingly an anonymous operation that was strongly controlled.

From his experiences from other universities, such as in Hungary, Tsokos could report positive experiences with more intensive lecturers-student relationships that did not exist in Germany. He particularly regretted the demolition of teaching in forensic medicine, which was increasingly shortened and neglected. In the course of the progressive changes, Tsokos decided to align his professional commitment differently and said goodbye to the Charité. This offered him the opportunity to reorient himself, reinforce his writer's activities and to have more time for personal affairs like the family.

As part of the interview,

tsokos also criticized that general practitioners and other doctors were often insufficiently prepared for corpses. This criticism goes back to the past and clarifies that many potentially relevant deaths can be overlooked, which he sees as intolerable. With regard to the corpse shows, he called for better training and more sensitivity in dealing with dead bodies to ensure an accurate information. The establishment of appropriately trained doctors for corpses is still one of his most pressing demands on politics.

Michael Tsokos is not only active as a forensic doctor, but also as a bestselling author. His interest in passing on knowledge in a variety of ways shows his writer's work, including the book series "With cold precision". Despite a broad spectrum of activities, Tsocos always strives to bring foritially closer to a wider audience and also to address uncomfortable issues such as death and the associated challenges.
