RBB shows teeth: 22 million euros savings plans and program reforms!

The Bundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) took important steps to stabilize its financial situation on June 3, 2025. The conclusion of a participation process with the workforce is a central point in the current reforms. The aim of the RBB management is to reduce the personnel and fee effort by 22 million euros annually, which corresponds to a drastic reduction of over 250 full-time positions and thus accounts for more than 10% of the current costs that amount to 215 million euros rbb24.

As part of an extensive savings program, around 150 measures were presented that are necessary due to a financial deficit. In addition to the adaptation of already planned austerity measures, concrete points, such as the retention of the radio children's broadcast "Ohrbär", were also decided. However, the production of the "Ohrbär" podcast was discontinued. In addition, the management limited the merging of the radio messages of all RBB programs to the weekend ZEIT.

planned measures and program reforms

Essential reforms in the administration and the program are required to achieve the desired savings. Director Ulrike Demmer has described the need for these reforms as inevitable and painful. The aim is to slim down the structures, reduce the production effort and to reduce management levels. Another step provides the thinning of the program, while strong brands are to be strengthened at the same time. The television format "Der Tag" is expanded to Saturday, and the local journal takes over new aspects Zeit.

employees in the RBB can take a position on the suggestions from the coming week and suggest alternative measures. This is done in the context of workshops that are intended to reflect on the feedback from the workforce. Talks with the employee representatives and unions are also planned. The RBB relies on programs for early retirement or mutually eliminated termination of employment relationships to avoid operational terminations RBB24.

Reforms of radio financing

The focus is on the reforms of the Radio Financing Change State Treaty. Ver.di and the DGB have taken a position on the reform of the contribution assessment procedure. Thanks to the confirmation of the proceedings by the Federal Constitutional Court, a goal is pursued: radio financing to secure from inadmissible interventions. The proposal to reduce the premium period for two years is considered problematic because it could destabilize the financial foundation. In this context, several federal states require the withdrawal of the constitutional action by ARD and ZDF ver.di .

The reforms that are considered urgently needed should not only guarantee financing, but also support the regional and cultural program variety, while new sources of income such as digital tax for online platforms are to be developed. It remains to be seen how these reforms have an impact on the variety of contents at the RBB and whether they can actually lead to stabilizing the institution ver.di.
