Rainald Grebe in the Berlin Waldbühne: A large concert full of emotions and surprises

Rainald Grebe returned this year for a big appearance in the Berlin Waldbühne. The 52-year-old songwriter and cabaret artist wanted to fulfill a long-term dream and repeat a mega experience from 2011. At that time he celebrated his 40th birthday with 15,000 fans in the Berlin Waldbühne.

However, Grebe has had to struggle with health problems in recent years. He suffers from incurable autoimmune disease vasculitis and has already suffered eleven strokes. In 2021 he had to cancel his planned forest stage concert due to the corona pandemic and in 2022 he was not doing well in terms of health. Nevertheless, his big appearance on July 29, 2023 was of great importance for him.

At the beginning of the concert, Grebe was visibly nervous. At his first song "Folk songs sing" he got stuck and got the lines messed up. The fear of another stroke passed the four-hour show like a running gag. Grebe kept staging himself as a patient who could be caught at any moment.

The moment was particularly impressive when Grebe was rolled onto the stage on a nursery. Previously, his husband, the technician Franz Schumann, had triggered a shock moment when he said it was not a good sign if Grebe did not appear. But Grebe got better and better in the course of the evening and he really looked solved.

The stage and the sound of the concert were great. Grebe had hired an orchestra with many brass wind players, a string quartet and a hunting bladder ensemble as well as puppet players, which provided full paintings. Every word of Grebe was easy to understand.

There were many special moments during the show. After the song "flight attendant", Grebe laid in a bedside and confessed that he had suicidal thoughts several times after the diagnosis. But he decided against it and emphasized how important his girlfriend and child are for him. The artist Ann Mateur created a good atmosphere with some well -known songs. Other special guests such as Bodo Wartke and Alligatoah also enriched the evening.

Of course, Grebe also played his biggest hit "Brandenburg". He initially presented the text in Sorbian and was then supported by the comedian Anna Mateur. The audience sang enthusiastically.

The mood in the audience was happy on the one hand and a lot was laughed, but due to the seriousness of the topics, too. The atmosphere reminded a bit of a bullfighting arena.

With this concert, Rainald Grebe has set a lasting monument. Despite his health problems, he has proven that he is a great artist and managed to inspire the audience. Hopefully it will remain that dead people live longer.
