Protests in Berlin: daycare centers closed due to unequal treatment

in Berlin, numerous daycare centers have been closed on Thursday due to a protest campaign by the Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband. The campaign was directed against the unequal treatment of the employees of freelance carriers compared to state employees, in particular with regard to the capital allowance. Around 3,000 employees of affected institutions demonstrated in front of the Berlin House of Representatives in order to underline their demand for payment of the capital allowance of 150 euros for their employees in daycare centers, youth facilities and advice centers.

Since November 2020, around 130,000 employees and civil servants in the public service in Berlin have received the monthly capital allowance of 150 euros, with only very high grade. Despite the assurance of the Senate to grant the allowance for employees of freelance, a withdrawal was made in February, which led to further dissatisfaction and displeasure.

unions and associations of free carriers continue to work to ensure that their employees receive the same advantages as the state employees. The demonstration on Thursday shows the pressure and determination of those affected to request equal treatment and fairness in relation to the capital allowance. Despite the current situation, the negotiations and efforts to find a solution are still in progress.
