Potsdam elects new mayor: Who has the best chances?

From Monday, September 21, 2025, election notifications for the upcoming mayoral election will be sent out in Potsdam. Around 143,000 Potsdam residents are eligible to vote and can cast their vote for the new city leader. The election notifications should land in citizens' mailboxes by the end of August 2025, said rbb24.

The necessity of this election arises from the early end of office of the former SPD mayor Mike Schubert. He was voted out of office by referendum due to massive criticism of his administration, which included, among other things, mismanagement and an affair over free tickets for sporting events. Schubert would normally not have been up for re-election until next year.

Election process and candidates

Potsdam citizens have the opportunity to apply for a postal vote - either together with the election notification or via an online form. A total of seven candidates are up for election, including:

  • Severin Fischer (SPD)
  • Clemens Viehrig (CDU)
  • Chaled-Uwe Said (AfD)
  • Dirk Harder (parteilos, tritt für Die Linke an)
  • Michael Reichert (Freie Wähler)
  • Alexander Dietmar Wietschel (Die Partei)
  • Noosha Aubel (parteilos, unterstützt von Grünen/Die Andere/Volt)

If none of the candidates achieve an absolute majority in the first round, a runoff election will be held on October 12, 2025. This process could make for an exciting campaign period as voters will pay more attention than ever to candidates' qualifications to find a suitable successor for the office.

Election research and social context

Different types of data are used in election research to gain insights into voting behavior. This includes aggregated data from statistical offices, survey data and representative election statistics. This data helps to analyze long-term trends in voting behavior and to understand the social contexts in which voting behavior is embedded. Analyzes take into account various characteristics such as employment structure and social stratification, which can influence the electorate (bpb).

With the upcoming election, not only political conditions are at stake, but also the future direction of the city of Potsdam. Citizens are called upon to cast their vote and thus take an active part in shaping their local politics. The developments surrounding the election and the reactions of citizens will be closely monitored in order to better understand the political mood in the city.
