Police officers in Berlin threaten hard punishments in the case of inadequate data queries
The data on the computer process system of the police is stored for all missions in Berlin. In the past, there have always been unauthorized queries from police officers, which is a data protection violation. The administrative management now has enough of this and announces hard punishments in the event that a process is not filled out correctly.
LKA boss Christian Steiof recently informed his employees about this measure. He complained that the police were repeatedly criticized due to these unauthorized queries and thus put the public in the public. In the past few years alone, 15 to 24 investigative proceedings against police officers have been initiated.
The police database, called Poliks (police system for information, communication and processing), logs internally and thus enables a retroactive statement. There are already many regulations, business instructions and instructions on queries in Poliks. Every policeman even has to sign annually that he adheres to all requirements. But obviously that's not enough.
According to the LKA boss, the right "additions" are missing, especially when it comes to "inquiry". Each official must document exactly who and why information about which process is needed. A simple entry such as "process processing" is not sufficient, but more detailed information must be given.
The authorities have now decided to consistently punish such violations. At the first violation there is a reference, after which the punishments will be even more strict and higher. Around 20,000 police employees are entitled to make queries in Polik.
This measure has the purpose of ensuring data protection and preventing unauthorized queries. The police would like to avoid being criticized and maintaining the public's trust. It remains to be seen how effective these punitive measures will be and whether this will reduce the number of unauthorized queries.
