Poland introduces border controls to Germany - Tusk explains reasons!
On July 1, 2025, Poland prime minister Donald Tusk announced the introduction of border controls to Germany and Lithuania. This measure, which comes into force next Monday, aims to curb the "uncontrolled stream of migrants back and forth". The temporary controls on the border with Germany are intended to reduce the uncontrolled migrant flow and are part of a series of measures that are usually not common within the Schengen zone, where there are usually no inpatient people. Tusk said that the Polish government had to become active in order to tackle and defuse the challenges associated with irregular migration.
As early as May 2025, the federal government had ordered controls at the German limits. These decisions come in a context in which the federal police can directly reject asylum seekers within the framework of the existing legal framework, but this is controversial. The governments in Germany and Poland show that they want to maintain both national security and public order in view of increasing migration.
background and other measures
The measures to introduce border controls are not to be considered in isolation. Various European countries, including Germany, have long expanded controls at their limits. One group of reasons includes irregular migration, the increasing aggression in Russia in Ukraine and security situation in the Middle East. An overview of the quarter -year intervals for existing border controls provides interesting insights into the current situation:
Land | period Th> | reasons Th> |
---|---|---|
Germany | 16.06.2024 - 15.12.2024 | irregular migration, security situation |
Austria | 12.11.2024 - 11.05.2025 | unstable migration situation, pressure on the asylum system |
Netherlands | 09.12.2024 - 08.06.2025 | High irregular migration, smuggling |
These measures are related to a new border process that the EU Parliament approved in April 2024 and provides for faster asylum decisions at the EU's external borders. Applications that are classified as obviously unfounded should be processed quickly in order to minimize the burden on the national systems. Asylum seekers will also not be allowed to enter the interior during the border procedure, which further underlines the strict security precautions.
It remains to be seen how effective border controls and new procedures will be in practice. In view of the complexity of the challenges that the irregular migration brings, close cooperation between the EU countries and the authorities is necessary to find a sustainable solution. The debate about migration, security and responsibility within the EU remains a central topic in European politics.
