Panel buildings of the 80s in Berlin-Mitte: Now listed!
Berlin-Mitte, Deutschland - The Berlin State Monument Office has given the prefabricated buildings from the 1980s in the Spandau suburb. These architectural relics were created between 1984 and 1989 and strategically filled construction gaps that still date from the war. Christoph Rauhut, director of the State Monument Office, emphasized that Berlin was "great luck" to preserve both outstanding construction projects from Eastern and West Berlin. This is a special responsibility to secure the city's legacy for future generations.
A total of 28 buildings were recognized in central streets such as Münzstraße, Torstraße and Linienstraße. These “old town panels” were not built as simple houses, but with shops and service facilities on the ground floor and thus reflect the social and planning developments of the time. The monument protection emphasizes the urban planning importance of these new buildings, which restored the historical street spaces and fit harmoniously into the surroundings.
