Plans for the largest car factory in Germany: Tesla plans to produce one million cars a year in Grünheide

Tesla plans to expand his factory in Grünheide (Oder-Spree) to become the largest car factory in Germany. The plans for the expansion of the factory can now be viewed publicly, either accessible to the local authorities or on the Internet. The documents include around 8,000 pages with plans, tables, diagrams, reports and correspondence.

The factory is expanded in three sub -steps. The first sub-permit deals with changes to the existing production facilities as well as the construction of camps and a battery cycling system. These conversions and new buildings should be completed by the first half of 2024.

The current factory is designed to produce 500,000 electric cars from model Y. However, this capacity is not used completely this year. The future factory will be able to produce 1 million cars per year, more than at any other car production location in Germany.

In addition, the capacity for the production of batteries from 50 to 100 gigawatt hours per year is to be increased. The area is also intended to receive a battery cycling system in order to regain materials from battery cells. However, it is not yet clear whether complete batteries in the factory will be made from scratch.

Tesla not only plans to produce model Y in Grünheide, but also other models. It is believed that the popular model 3 could also be produced there because it shares some parts with the Y model. Tesla boss Elon Musk had already announced in spring that Grünheide should also be a production location for other models.

Some passages in the publicly visible documents are blackened, in particular information on hazardous substances in the production steps. Tesla justifies this with the protection of personal data as well as operational and business secrets. However, environmental associations could appeal because these passages look like a black box for outsiders.

The documents can be viewed by August 18 and objections can be submitted by September 18. On October 23, a public discussion will take place in the city hall of Erkner.
