In contrast to the heating oil prices on July 24th, no tendency at rising prices can be seen in the pellets. On the contrary, the price per tonne wood pellets is stable below 400 euros. Nevertheless, the pellet prices for this season are unusually high. The German Pellinstitut (Depi) mentions the increased raw material prices as a reason for this development due to the reserved demand in the construction sector. As a result, the sawmills are not fully busy and produce fewer sawdust for pellet production.

Nevertheless, pellets are still cheaper than heating oil and gas. In June, the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) for pellets was 8.17 cents, while heating oil was 8.95 cents/kWh and gas at 12.01 cents/kWh. The Depi assumes that the demand and price situation will calm down in the coming weeks. For consumers who still have supplies, it can be worthwhile. You may be able to benefit from falling pellet prices in the next few weeks.

The question of whether you should buy pellets or wait now should not only be made dependent on the price. As with heating oil, the same applies here: If you have no or only a few pellets in stock, you should act now and buy at least a small amount of wood pellets. An orientation for the optimal purchase time is the development of pellet prices in the past. In general, wood pellets are cheaper in the summer months, apart from the energy crisis in 2022.
