Traffic calming in Pankow: Citizen participation starts in September
traffic transition in the Pankower Kiez: an act of citizen participation
With the aim of improving the quality of life in the Pankower Kiezen, the Pankow district office starts a comprehensive examination for the implementation of neighborhood blocks. This refers in particular to the Winsviertel, Bötzow-Kiez and the Green City, where from September 4, 2024, citizens will be actively involved in the planning process.
What makes neighborhood blocks special?
Kiezblocks are residential areas in which through traffic is severely restricted by motor vehicles. The aim is to make the street space more attractive for the stay of people. This ensures access to all goals within the quarter, but the priority should be on pedestrians and cyclists.
The first phase of citizen participation begins with traffic counts that will be carried out in the coming weeks. These surveys are crucial to get a precise picture of the current traffic situation. The results are communicated via the social media channels and the website of the urban development office.
How can citizens get their ideas?
From September 4, resident has the opportunity to share their perceptions to danger spots and traffic obstacles both online and on site. A comprehensive range of participation is intended to ensure that all votes are heard. In an online survey on Mein.Berlin.de, suggestions can be submitted by October 5, 2024.
In addition, personal conversations and workshops will take place in the library at the water tower. These events offer a platform to get in touch with the planning team directly, to receive information and to actively participate in the process. Interested parties have the opportunity to present their ideas and immerse themselves in a business game that begins on September 18, 2024.
- 18. September 2024: Information event from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- 24. September 2024 & October 1, 2024: Open office hours from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the library.
- 25. September 2024: AI-supported workshop for children and adolescents to design traffic-calmed neighborhoods from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
This initiative aims to develop a traffic concept for each of the three neighborhoods based on the results of the citizen participation. An interdisciplinary team is commissioned to evaluate the data in order to present the results from the spring of 2025. The implementation of the measures, such as the creation of neighborhood blocks, is initially aimed for in the Winsviertel, followed by the other neighborhoods.
In summary, it can be said that the planned measures should not only improve the traffic situation, but also promote the quality of life of the residents through more space for pedestrians and a more lively neighborhood. These developments are part of a larger trend towards more environmentally friendly and sustainable urban planning, which is becoming increasingly important.
