Remodeling of the Gertrud-Classenplatz: New habitat for insects and humans
At the end of May this year, work to redesign the Gertrud-Classen Square in Prenzlauer Berg will begin. The square that lies between Hosemannstrasse, Erich-Weinert-Straße and Nauggarder Straße is to be significantly upgraded by a large-scale renovation and extensive planting. In October 2023, the planning was presented to the public and met with great interest.
In the course of the redesign, stumbling blocks are remedied in the pavement and an interactive jumping game integrated into the flooring. Langs of Hosemannstrasse are planted three FeldaHorne, while six other trees, including flower cocks and rock bulbs, are to find their place.
The insect-friendly planting, which is realized on the square in the area of Erich-Weinert-Straße, is particularly noteworthy. New perennial and shrub surfaces are created on around 290 square meters, which are intended to serve as a habitat for bees, beetles and birds. Among other things, lilac, spares, geraniums, birds bird plants and local plants such as bloodjohannis wort and round -leaved bell flower are used.To improve the quality of stay, six benches are placed on the new trees and, especially for seniors, suitable seating furniture is set up at two locations. In addition, 14 bicycle brackets are installed to enable the securing of bicycles.
The planting work for the trees, shrubs and perennials will be carried out in autumn to grow successful and to ensure optimal development of vegetation.
District Councilor Manuela Anders-Granitzki emphasizes the importance of the redesign for the Pankow district: "The increase in quality of stay on the Gertrud-Classen-Platz will create another place for encounter and exchange."
Overall, the planning and redesign of the Gertrud-Classenplatz shows the endeavor to beautify public spaces and to make it more livable for the residents. This project will certainly help increase the attractiveness of the district and create a beautiful environment for everyone.
