New sports center in Pankow: laying the foundation for the future of sport!

The district office Pankow invites you to lay the foundation stone of a new functional building on the “Ella-Kay-Straße” sports facility. The event will take place on Thursday, September 16, 2025, from 3:30 p.m. to around 4:30 p.m., at Ella-Kay-Straße 2 in Berlin. The new building is intended to cover the increasing need for school and extra -curricular sports offers in the region. The planned building will be two-storey, barrier-free and with modern changing rooms and sanitary rooms. In addition, it will offer areas for primary school at the planetarium and various clubs. The aim is to strengthen the community and the social infrastructure in Prenzlauer Berg.

The existing functional building, which was built in the mid -1950s, no longer meets the modern requirements. A lack of contemporary changing room and shower facilities, as well as poor energy efficiency, led to the decision to tear off the old building. Construction is planned for early 2025, while the new building is to be completed in mid -2027. The total costs for the project amount to around 5 million euros, which are financed by the federal program "Refurbishment of municipal institutions in the areas of sports, youth and culture" (SJK 2022), compensation amounts in the funding area sustainable renewal - Prenzlauer Berg and the sports facility renovation program of the state of Berlin.

Improvement of the sports infrastructure

The new facility will significantly improve the supply situation for school and club sport. The sports facility is used particularly intensively by the primary school at the planetarium and the SG Rotation Prenzlauer Berg association, which operates hockey sports on the square. In 2016, the former natural grass was replaced by a modern hockey base turf that significantly improved the use of the sports area. This is part of an entire strategy to modernize and expand the sports infrastructure in Berlin. There are currently over 4,450 public sports facilities in Berlin that are available for the city's athletes to ensure fundamental care.

The need for a replacement new building has been an issue since 2018. The planned new building will not only be larger, but will also extend over the property border. A partial development of an adjacent parking space is planned, which is expected to lead to the loss of around 20 parking spaces. In an information event for users and residents that took place on October 16, 2024, the plans and progress of the project were presented.

This new functional building is another step to strengthen the social and sporting infrastructure in the capital and help to offer young people and athletically active better conditions.
