New ways and plantings in the Ernst-Thälmann Park: Remodeling for more quality of life
redesign of the Ernst Thälmann Park between the Planetarium and the elementary school
In the next three months, new ways will be created in the Ernst-Thälmann Park with lighting and extensive plantings are carried out. This measure takes place as part of the connection between the Zeiss Grand Planetarium and the school campus to the Diesterwegstraße, which begins by the street and green area office on August 19, 2024. During the construction phase, the path is expected to be closed for three months. In the late autumn or early winter, tree plantings are also planned, but they have no further restrictions. The snake playground remains available, since the block is only set up behind the access.
elementary school expansion leads to redesign of the park
The expansion of the school campus by additional school places requires adjustments in Ernst-Thälmann-Park. The primary school at the planetarium is expanded from three to five trains and converted into a closed campus. In 2022, construction work was already carried out on the school premises and the area fenced. So far, the east-west connection has been from the western park, along the schoolyard and the sports areas, to the eastern parking area, in which there are residential areas, the swimming pool and daycare centers. This path axis, which was also used by commuters between the S-Bahn stations Prenzlauer Allee and Greifswalder Straße, is no longer available to the public and is being redesigned. A walking and cycle path was already being built south of the primary school, which replaces the previous east-west connection.
curved path with new space
As part of the redesign, a curved path is created, which is surrounded by trees and includes a space with seating. In addition, shrub surfaces are supplemented and the new path is equipped with mast lights. The financing of around € 325,000 takes place from the "Sustainable Renewal" funding program.
District Councilor Manuela Anders-Granitzki emphasizes the importance of the measures: "After the expansion of the elementary school at the planetarium last year, the eliminated footpath connection is now being replaced. By creating a new space with seating areas, we would like to design the Ernst-Thälmann-Park even more accessible and inviting for all citizens."
