Kiezlabor in Prenzlauer Allee: Meaning for youth participation in Berlin
From September 10 to October 4, 2024, the court of the cultural and education center Sebastian Haffner will be transformed into a creative hotspot for young people in Berlin in the Prenzlauer Allee 227/228. The CityLab presents the neighborhood laboratory, an innovative room concept in a converted ship container that functions as an open forum for exchange and participatory projects.
Under the appealing motto “Jung in the big city - open rooms, give rooms” young people can express their opinions, take part in workshops and develop their ideas for designing their neighborhood. The organizers, including the Pankow City Library in cooperation with numerous partners, are committed to actively involving the youth in the decision -making process.
Various events for a lively participation
The action week includes various formats that focus on both creative and scientific approaches. These include:
- 10. September 2024: Opening event "Ask your district office!" With a question and answer session from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
- 15. September 2024: Democracy Day with a living library and art campaigns from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- 18. September 2024: Maintaining the traffic transition through neighborhood blocks from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Additional Kiezblock consultation hours on September 24th and October 1st for personal concerns.
- Special event on September 25, 2024: Development of neighborhood bloc visions with AI supported discussion from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
An additional focus is on the integration of school classes: In the morning, closed workshops and business games are offered, which are specifically geared towards the needs of schools. This not only promotes the participation of young people, but also promotes the sense of community and the active participation of the city.
importance of the initiative
This project is an important step towards youth participation. The possibility that young people can express their ideas and dreams in the context of their neighborhood is essential for a democratic society. The organizers pursue the goal of strengthening the youth dialogue and focusing on the votes of the younger generation. This is particularly relevant because the young population is often underrepresented in urban planning processes.
