Kiezblock in Pankow: Dispute over peace and traffic - what's going on in the composer district?

In Berlin, the introduction of the first neighborhood block in the composer district ensures heated debates among residents and business owners. While some welcome the redesign as a positive step towards more quality of life and safer roads, others massively express their dissatisfaction. The topic of conflict is about the bollards, the traffic regulations and the associated reduction in motorized traffic. The measures that serve to minimize through traffic were developed in cooperation with experts from the TU Berlin and the TU Dresden. The bollards brought up to 6000 vehicles a day on tours through side streets, a fact that has led to over 1000 traffic accidents in the past two years, as Berliner Week reported.

The competence team, which was used to monitor these new traffic regulations, consists of 14 members who represent the different mobility needs of the residents. These include craftsmen, business owners, seniors and cyclists. However, a split opinion has developed among residents. While some appreciate the calm and security of the quarter, business people complain about the lack of walk -in customers, especially after the popular Fauchgold delicatessen had to close after 16 years. A business owner notes that the sunken lust and inflation represent much greater problems than the traffic policy of the Greens, while others, like Erik Wolle, who operates a locally established bicycle business, pray the neighborhood block as a necessary change.

evaluation of the neighborhood block

With regard to the traffic situation, it is currently evaluated how effective the measures of the neighborhood block are actually. The existing one -way regulation could not be sufficient to achieve the desired effects. The district councilor for urban development, Cornelius Bechtler, confirmed that an extensive review of the statutory and traffic technical conditions will take place in order to highlight the positive aspects and to make necessary adjustments. The composer district could serve as a model for future neighborhood blocks in Pankow, which are already being planned, as Berliner Zeitung reported.
