GDR memories: Peter Wensierski's private archive unveiled.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, an event with the renowned journalist Peter Wensierski will take place in the Pankow Museum. Wensierski, who is one of the few West German journalists who were able to report directly from the GDR, will present photos and short films from his private archive that evening. This unique collection not only includes photos from its time as a GDR travel correspondent, but also surprising East/West short films as well as secreted videos of the political magazine.

The event is being carried out by the Federal Foundation and the Robert Havemann-Gesellschaft e. V. organized in cooperation with the Pankow Museum. The Berlin Commissioner to deal with the SED dictatorship supports the event. Admission is free and the event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium on the 3. floor of the museum, located at the Prenzlauer Allee 227/228 in 10405 Berlin.

As part of the conversation with the moderator Dagmar Hovestädt, the effects of 40 years of life in the GDR, the difficult time after reunification and the importance of memory of the GDR are discussed. Topics such as rebellious young people in Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg, stranded after the fall of the Berlin Wall on Alexanderplatz, right-wing radicalism, depressed behavior of GDR citizens in the west as well as early climate protectionists in the East are addressed.

Peter Wensierski was awarded this year's Karl-Wilhelm-Fricke Prize of the Federal Foundation for his outstanding journalistic work. The event thus promises an exciting and informative examination of the GDR and its importance for the present. Further information on the events in the Pankow Museum are available on their website.
