expert criticizes Viktor Orbán's trips as diplomatically awkward
Berlin (DTS news agency) - The renowned political scientist Herfried Münkler has sharply criticized the recent trips of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to Kiev, Moscow and Beijing. In an interview with the "Rheinische Post", Münkler Orbán's approach described as rash and a kind of "one-man show".
Münkler emphasizes that Orbán always tries to stage himself as the leader of a right party career in the European Parliament and to pursue his own political goals. His attempts to act as an intermediary in the Ukrainian conflict are considered questionable by Münkler. The expert believes that such diplomatic activities actually belong in the hands of the Ukrainian government and should not be carried out by a single player like Orbán.
also critically sees Münkler Orbán in relation to negotiations with Russia. He doubts that the Russian President Putin would be willing to recognize a politician like Orbán as an intermediary, since he has too little influence and power at an international level.
The fact that Orbán started his “peace mission” during the EU Presidency in Hungary, without consulting European institutions, is also criticized. Usually the high representative of the EU for foreign and security policy, currently Josep Borrell, would be responsible for such matters.
Herfried Münkler, former professor of political science at the Humboldt University in Berlin, warns that Orbán's solo proceeds could make the diplomatic efforts in conflict with Russia and Ukraine difficult.
