Public service broadcasting: Reforms disrupt the diversity

A furious Thursday is imminent! The prime ministers will take on a hotly discussed topic tomorrow: the reform of public service broadcasting! The focus of the consultations will be the first public draft of the so-called "Reform State Treaty", which should make the financing system forward-looking.

But a high-ranking representative of the United Service Union (ver.di), Christoph Schmitz-Detlefsen , warns of the possible dangers of this reform! For him, the proposed flexible budgeting approaches are pragmatic solutions to avoid populist blockages in the broadcasting commission, but he also sees great disaster on other fronts. "So -called competence centers, which forces the ARD to work and at the same time builds radio waves - but nobody asks about the actual financial savings or the consequences for the staff!" He scolded.

variety of programs in danger!

Another critical point is the intended cooperation between ARD and ZDF. "Publicism is not only limited here, but the basic order of ARD and ZDF is seriously questioned!" Warned Schmitz-Dethlefsen. According to his statements, this could mark the beginning of the end of the proven "two -track system". "The variety of programs is willful sacrificed on the altar of cost reductions!" He stated.

The efforts of the countries to support the press are also clearly too far for him! While the publishers benefit from regulations that allow content to link the content behind Paywalls, the design freedom of the public service is drastically trimmed by a up-to-date clause. "The content must be attractive and constantly available for users! This is the only way to maintain the trust of the contributors!", Schmitz-Detlefsen appealed.

ignored know-how!

He also critically sees the reform process himself: "External expertise was obtained, but the valuable knowledge of the broadcasting employees was completely disregarded! Here, an advisory board of employees is urgently needed for regular evaluation!" Time is forced, the reform process has to be re -enacted quickly!

Do those responsible want to set the course or threaten to get public service broadcasting into a creeping chaos? The debate about the reform will remain exciting - a topic that everyone should have on the radar!
