Neukölln opens new primary school: 87 students for the Koppelweg!

On September 8, 2025, the primary school on Koppelweg in Neukölln started its first school year. Around 87 children are taught there, divided into five cross-age learning groups, while the enrollment of 38 new learners will be celebrated next weekend, at which district mayor Martin Hikel will be present. The school is an important project that is intended to help relieve the burden on the Britz school district. The fact that the school building was completed on time for the start of the school year is another positive aspect of this project. Berlin.de reports that the school was built in a compartment design and offers space for a total of 432 students in grades 1 to 6.

Construction of the school began with the groundbreaking ceremony in May 2023. This measure was necessary after the plans for the new elementary school on Koppelweg had existed since the 1990s and could only be implemented late due to the unequal distribution of schools in the district. The south of Neukölln in particular was inadequately provided with educational facilities for years, which meant that many students had to travel to the northern part of the district to get to school. Developmentstadt.de explains that the start of construction was further delayed because the financial resources were released late.

Characteristics of the new building

The elementary school on Koppelweg is not only a place of learning, but also an architectural highlight that was built in accordance with the specifications of the Berlin school building offensive. This initiative promotes a modular and effective construction method that makes it possible to build schools in a short time. Berlin.de emphasizes that the modular concept was designed by the competition for this special building, the winner of which was the Berlin architecture firm Bruno Fioretti Marquez GmbH. The school also has a special sports hall that can be used in many ways.

In addition to the school, the new building project also includes a sports area that is used by both the students and local sports clubs. The sports hall is designed for 199 spectators and offers modern equipment. Sustainability aspects were also taken into account during the planning. Both the school and the sports hall are barrier-free and include facilities such as rainwater management and a photovoltaic system on the roof.

In the coming months, the design of the outdoor area will still be carried out, and construction work in the street country is also planned. This includes new sidewalks and holding bays, which should be completed within the next two weeks. For the safety of the students: Inside, a pedestrian crossing in front of the school is planned. An official opening of the primary school will take place after all work has been completed and invited separately.
