Children's passport no longer valid from 2024

The Bundestag recently decided that children's passports will no longer be re -exhibited, extended or updated from January 1, 2024. Passes already issued retain their validity until the expiry period. In the future, children up to the age of 12 can receive a identity card, passport or a temporary document as required. A identity card is sufficient for travel within the EU, while for travel destinations outside the EU a passport is usually required.

The changeover means less effort and costs for parents and issuing authorities. However, parents should note that some countries require a certain validity of the document when entering and that documents that no longer allow clear identification are considered invalid even before the end of the end.

In addition, the fee for the exhibition of passenger passes for people from the age of 24 will be increased from 60 to 70 euros, insofar as the passports are valid for ten years.

This change in law concerns many parents in Germany who deal with trips abroad. It means simplification of the document management, but also the need to keep an eye on the validity of the documents in order to avoid unpleasant surprises when entering.

Relevant historical information is that the children's passport was introduced in Germany in 2006 and is now abolished after around 18 years.

In the following you will find a table with the most important information about the various travel documents:

| Documentart | Value | Cost |
| —————- | ———— | ————- |
| ID card | 10 years | Approx. 37 euros |
| Passport | 10 years | Approx. 70 euros |
| Preliminary document | Max. 1 year | Approx. 26 euros |

The abolition of the children's passport and the increase in passports from the age of 24 are important innovations in the German passport system that require a review of your own travel documents.
