Sidewalks renovated and tree slices enlarged: Neukölln makes streets climate

The district office Neukölln recently carried out extensive measures to improve the sidewalks and enlarge the tree slices in Weisestrasse. It is particularly noteworthy that parts of the actual road were sealed on a section between Mahlower Straße and Selchower Straße and the tree slices struck. This is intended to better supply the street trees with rainwater and also have enough space for rooting below the road.

These measures were described by Jochen Biedermann, the district councilor for urban development, environment and transport, as an important step to adapt the streets to the current climatic challenges. He emphasized the importance of making life easier for the street trees to maintain their functions in the city.

The plans for these measures were part of the "Forum Rainwater: 10 ideas for the sponge capital" of the Berlin rainwater agency and were among the top 10 of a total of 73 submitted ideas. In addition, the results of the tree concept for the Schillerkiez were taken into account, which was implemented as part of the "Living district of Schillerpromenade".

Overall, not only the sidewalks in Weisestrasse were renovated and the tree slices were enlarged, but the floor in the root areas of the street trees were also loosened, replaced by new soil and the surface designed water -permeable. Two new trees were also planted to further strengthen the green infrastructure.

These measures are an important step towards creating climate t shaves in Neukölln and help to secure the quality of life in the neighborhoods in the long term. Further information on this project can be found on the Schillerpromenade website.
